'I'd have had a heart attack!' Snake found roaming Galashiels
Last updated 22nd Jun 2026
A large snake - believed to be a python - has been found slithering through the centre of Galashiels.
It was picked up near the bottom of the stairs at Iceland car park last night (Sunday).
Arthurshiel Rescue Centre - near St Boswells - issued an appeal for anyone who may have lost it to get in touch.
While the sight of a snake on the loose left some locals rattled, experts believe the animal is most likely a royal python, also known as a ball python—a species known for its calm, timid nature.
"I'm glad it wasn't me that found it, I'd have had a heart attack," one person wrote, while another described the encounter as their "worst nightmare."
Others were more sympathetic towards the reptile.
"Poor thing, hope it hasn't been dumped," a third replied.
Despite their fearsome reputation, ball pythons are among the most popular pet snakes in the world.
Native to West and Central Africa, they are non-venomous and typically grow to around 3–5 feet in length.
Their nickname comes from their habit of curling into a tight ball when frightened.

A spokesperson for Arthurshiel said: "Has anyone lost this snake - possibly a python?
"It was found at bottom of stairs near iceland Galashiels and is safe at present . Call if it's yours and we will give you number of who has it."
It's not the only snake spotted out in public recently. Dog-walkers were recently warned of an adder sunbathing near Traquair.
However, in an update this afternoon, the animal rescue centre announced it's owner had been found.
We understand it had been missing for "a number of weeks".
