'One poor decision could change lives forever' - Borders Buses issues warning following e-scooter incident
Last updated 4 hours ago
There's a call for a renewed clampdown on the use of e-scooters in Hawick after CCTV images captured two youths riding directly behind a bus in Burnfoot.
The images, released by Borders Buses, have prompted concern from local councillor Stuart Marshall, who warned the behaviour could have serious consequences.
He told Greatest Hits Radio: "The pictures of these irresponsible youths behaving in such a way are not only putting their own lives at risk but also compromising the safety of bus drivers and their passengers."
Borders Buses said the footage highlighted just how dangerous the situation was, warning that if the driver had needed to brake suddenly, "the consequences could have been devastating".
Mr Marshall said concerns about e-scooter use in the town had been raised repeatedly in recent months.
"Community councillors throughout the town have called for action to be taken against these folk who are repeatedly riding these scooters in such a dangerous manner and this latest incident is yet another clear example," he said.
He is now urging authorities to take swift action.
"These youths must be dealt with very swiftly before we have a real tragedy in our community," Councillor Marshall added.
"I do hope Police Scotland are swift in dealing with this issue."

Borders Buses said it is continuing to work with Police Scotland and local partners to tackle anti-social behaviour and help keep communities safe.
A statement from the bus company read: "Our drivers carry hundreds of passengers every day, and their priority is getting everyone home safely. They should never have to worry about someone putting themselves – and others – at risk through dangerous behaviour on our roads.
"If you know someone who rides an e-scooter, please have a conversation with them. One poor decision could change lives forever."
