Work paving way for Tweedbank Care Village 'completed sooner than anticipated'
Last updated 15th Jun 2026
Construction's due to get underway this week on a new dementia-friendly care village in Tweedbank.
It comes after the early works to prepare the site – opposite the region's rail terminus - were completed ahead of schedule.
The £19 million development will provide accommodation for 60 residents once complete.
Each household will have its own shared living, dining and kitchen space, designed to promote independence and a more homely environment.
It’s being described as a major shift in the way care is delivered locally, moving away from traditional institutional settings towards smaller, community-focused living.
Residents will also have access to secure outdoor areas aimed at encouraging social interaction, exercise and a connection with nature.
A sod-cutting ceremony took place on the Lowood Estate after planning permission was granted for the project last year.
The care village had originally been expected to open in June 2027, but councillors have now been told that enabling works were "completed sooner than anticipated".
Speaking at a meeting of Scottish Borders Council's Executive Committee, Director of Finance Suzy Douglas said the contract for the main construction phase was signed in May, allowing work on the landmark project to begin this week.
