A 53-year-old man has died after the motorbike he was riding was involved in a collision with two cars in the Scottish Borders.

Emergency services were summoned to the A72 near Glenormiston Lodge - between Cardrona and Innerleithen - after the alarm was raised around 12.30pm on Saturday.

An air ambulance from Glasgow was also sent.

But the rider of the black Yamaha YBR 125 was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for more than eight hours while police examined the scene and the wreckage was cleared.

A number of bus services between Galashiels and Peebles were cancelled as traffic was diverted.

But there are no reports of other injuries from the crash, which also involved a grey Citroen C4 Picasso and a yellow Citroen DS3.

And the road reopened around 9pm.

Sergeant Dave Waddell, from Police Scotland, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died.

“Enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash to contact us.

"We would like to thank the members of the public who assisted at the scene of the crash.

“We’d ask anyone with dash-cam footage which could assist our enquiries to come forward.”

It's the third death on our region's roads in less than a week.

On Wednesday evening, two men - aged 35 and 42 - died after a green Ford Fiesta and a silver Nissan Leaf were involved in a collision on the A6089 near Floors Castle in Kelso.

Anyone with information on the latest crash is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident 1284 of Saturday, April 11th.

Last week's crash happened on the A6089 just north of Kelso.

Meanwhile, Hawick United has revealed its players were involved in a car crash while returning home from their football match in Duns later in the afternoon.

"An air ambulance was sent for but thankfully was not needed," a statement on the club's Facebook page read.

"The players involved are in the process of being checked out at hospital.

"Thanks to those who have already sent us messages. Nights like this make you realise that football is just a game at the end of the day. This could have been a very different post."

Police say enquiries into the cause of the crash are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 4.40pm on Saturday, police were called to a crash involving at least two vehicles on the A6105, Greenlaw Station, Wester Row, Greenlaw.

"All occupants from the vehicles were taken to hospital, a 24-year-old man who was the driver of the van, and five men, aged 18, 19, 22, 23 and 30, from the car.

"All have since been discharged apart from the 30-year-old man who remains under observation."
