A motorist is in a "serious" condition in hospital after the car they were driving was involved in a collision with another car and a lorry on the A7.

Emergency services - including four fire crews - rushed to the scene, near Heriot, after the alarm was raised shortly before midday yesterday (Wednesday).

It's the latest in a series of serious and fatal crashes on the road, between Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders, in recent months.

The route was closed for more than six hours while police examined the scene and the wreckage was cleared, causing some bus services to be delayed or cancelled.

And officers this morning confirmed investigations, to establish exactly what happened, are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.50am on Wednesday, police were called to a crash on the A7, north of Stow, involving two cars and lorry.

"The driver of a car involved was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where their condition is described as serious.

“No one else was injured. The road was re-opened around 6.05pm.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the crash.”
