Passengers travelling through Stansted Airport faced a difficult start to the week after a lounge fire and a major signalling fault combined to cause disruption today (24 September).

The airport confirmed that a fire broke out in its Escape Lounge earlier in the morning, forcing a temporary evacuation.

In a statement, Stansted said the departure lounge has now reopened and passengers are once again being processed through security. However, waiting times are likely to be longer than usual.

Flights were not suspended during the incident, and both departures and arrivals are continuing to operate. Some flights may still face delays, and passengers are advised to check directly with their airlines.

The airport added: “We thank all passengers for their patience as we ensured the terminal was safe for them to re-enter.”

Shortly after, Greater Anglia reported that all rail lines serving Stansted were blocked due to a signalling fault at the airport station.

Services on the Stansted Express are currently terminating at Bishops Stortford, with trains unable to run between Bishops Stortford/Elsenham and Stansted Airport in either direction. CrossCountry services have also been hit.

Replacement buses are running in limited numbers between Bishops Stortford and Stansted Airport. In addition, Stansted Express tickets are being accepted on the following local bus routes:

  • Route 305 (Central Connect) between Bishops Stortford Interchange (Stop E) and Stansted Airport Coach Station
  • Route 333 (Central Connect) between Braintree Bus Interchange (Stand 6) and Stansted Airport Coach Station

Greater Anglia has warned that the disruption will continue until further notice.

Travellers are being urged to allow extra time, check live updates before setting out, and confirm flight details directly with their airlines.
