Pair jailed after fatal 139mph fatal crash in Burnage

Police say it's one of the most reckless pieces of driving they have ever come across

Two men have been sentenced to a combined total of 24-years in prison after a fatal crash in Manchester in which a car was recorded travelling at 139mph seconds before impact.

Uways Hussain, of Burnage, Manchester, and Usmon Mahmood, of Levenshulme, Manchester, appeared at Manchester Crown Court on Friday 29th May.

Hussain was sentenced to 11 years and 8 months.

Mahmood was sentenced to 12 years and 9 months.

The court heard the pair spent the night driving at speeds of more than 100mph on roads with 30mph limits while filming themselves on mobile phones.

Greater Manchester Police said officers believe it is one of the first cases nationally where a passenger has been convicted for aiding and abetting causing death by dangerous driving.

Sylvester Abayomi died after the crash on Kingsway in March 2026.

Crash happened after night of dangerous driving

Footage recovered during the investigation showed the pair repeatedly driving at extreme speeds throughout the night.

Police said videos showed the car weaving through traffic, going through red lights and reaching speeds above 130mph on several occasions.

Moments before the crash, investigators said the vehicle was travelling at 139mph.

The crash happened at around 4:36am near the junction of Green End Road and Kingsway.

The court heard Mr Abayomi entered Kingsway on a green light before being struck after the offenders went through a red light.

Family tribute paid to Sylvester Abayomi

Mr Abayomi’s partner, Denise, paid tribute following his death.

She said: “On Monday 9th March, the love of my life was taken away, he was the most caring soul and gentle person you could ever meet. He had time for everybody and is loved by everyone. Syll will be sadly missed.”

Mr Abayomi, 50, suffered serious injuries following the crash at the junction of Green End Road and Kingsway shortly after 4.30am on Monday 9th March.

He later died in hospital.

His family have been supported by specially trained officers throughout the investigation.
