A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and arson after a body was found in a burnt-out house on the Isle of Wight.

Emergency services were called to the fire at the property in Ronsons Close, Cowes, at 3.32am on Friday.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesman said: ā€œOfficers attended along with colleagues from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Isle of Wight Ambulance, with neighbouring addresses evacuated as a precaution whilst the fire was brought under control.

ā€œOne person has subsequently been located deceased within the property.

ā€œNo formal identification has taken place, however next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

ā€œA file will be prepared for the coroner.

ā€œAt this time the cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious.ā€

The spokesman said that the detained suspect, who is from Ventnor, had been arrested on suspicion of murder and arson with intent to endanger life and remained in custody while investigations continued.

He added: ā€œWe are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time, or has doorbell, dashcam, or CCTV footage that they believe could assist with our investigation to come forward.ā€
