A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and criminal damage with intent to endanger life following an explosion at a block of flats in Ipswich.

Police were called to Princes Street shortly before 8.45pm on Friday 31st July after reports of an explosion, which caused damage to several windows.

Residents of the property were evacuated as a precaution while emergency services attended the scene.

An 18-year-old man was arrested at around 9.05pm and has been taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he remains in custody.

Suffolk Police said enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, but no injuries have been reported.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and the East of England Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

Princes Street is expected to remain closed overnight, with a diversion in place for motorists.
