An investigation's underway after a man in his 40s drowned in the River Yare in Surlingham.

Emergency services were called to a stretch of water near Ferry Road this afternoon.

The death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

The man's family have been informed.

A Norfolk Police spokesperson said:

"The body of a man has been discovered in the River Yare at Surlingham today (30 May 2026).

"Emergency services have been on scene since yesterday afternoon (29 May 2026) after reports of a concern for the safety of a man in the water on a stretch of the river near Ferry Road at 2.33pm.

"Police, fire, coastguard, air ambulance and search teams from Norfolk and Suffolk have been on scene and searches continued into the night and early this morning.

"Specialist equipment, including sonar, and a dive team were at the incident and discovered the body of a man in his 40s this afternoon, who was sadly declared deceased at the scene.

"His next of kin has been informed.

"A police cordon is still currently in place."

A total of 15 people have now died in open water in the UK during the hot weather spell.
