Home Office closes 13 asylum hotels
Accommodation is being returned to local communities as part of plans to bring greater control and fairness to the system.

The government has announced it is closing 13 asylum hotels as part of a drive to end their use.
It's expected to save taxpayers £51 million, with the expected savings from this year's total closures at £224 million.
44 asylum hotels have been closed so far in 2026 in an effort to reduce burden on local communities and encourage hotels to be used for tourism and business.

- Holiday Inn Bridgwater
- Needham House, Hitchin
- Staycity Apartments Deptford Bridge, Lewisham
- Grosvenor Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon
- Nottingham Hotel, Nottingham
- Grand Metropole Hotel, Blackpool
- Gold Thorn Hotel, Wolverhampton
- Britannia Ashley Hotel, Hale
- Chimney House Hotel, Sandbach
- Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Loughborough
This round of closures follows 11 in April and 20 in June, in a government aim to restore "control and fairness" to Britain's immigration system.
With more hotels closing their doors to asylum seekers, focus has shifted onto the use of larger, basic housing options such as former military sites.
A new 24-week target for deciding asylum and immigration appeals will also come into force today for those in accommodation, and foreign national offenders. It's set to cut down the average waiting time of 67 weeks.
What have the government said?
The closures form part of Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's plans to restore control to the border and fairness to Britain's immigration system.
The government say this includes removing incentives that encourage people to illegally migrate, as well as increasing the removal of those without the right to be in the UK.
In a statement, Immigration Minister Anna Turley said that "for too long, communities have watched hotels at the centre of their towns and cities become symbols of a broken asylum system.
"We are turning that around by ending the use of asylum hotels for good and moving people into larger, basic accommodation like former military sites.
"This Government’s reforms are overhauling the immigration system to restore control at the border, and fairness to our immigration system."
