71 dogs and puppies have been rescued and rehomed after concerns about illegal puppy sales in Bury.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) teamed up with the RSPCA to seize the dogs from two properties in the Radcliffe area.
The operation was carried out after information from a member of the public raised concerns over potential animal cruelty and unlawful puppy sales.
Investigators discovered most of the dogs in poor conditions, alongside equipment believed to be used for the fraudulent and illegal sale and breeding of puppies.
Two men, aged 51 and 37, and two women, aged 50 and 31, were arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty. They have since been released on bail pending further investigation.
Inspector Halligan from GMP’s Bury district said the operation highlights the importance of public information.
“Following intelligence received from a member of the public, we have been able to seize dogs and puppies – most of which were kept in extremely bad conditions, and alongside RSPCA we have given them new leases of life," Halligan said.
“Two properties have been searched, and alongside rescuing the dogs, we have recovered equipment consistent with the fraudulent and unlawful sale and breeding of puppies.”
Halligan reiterated the importance of reporting concerns and provided advice for those suspecting illegal activity.
“Anyone with concerns over illegal puppy sales should contact Greater Manchester Police using the online reporting method or calling 101," Halligan said.
"Animal welfare concerns can also be reported to the RSPCA."
