A man has died after being shot by armed police following an incident in Bedford.

Bedfordshire Police responded to reports of vehicles being damaged on Aylesbury Road shortly after 10.40pm on Monday.

Upon arrival, officers found the man barricaded inside a property, making threats.

Specialist armed officers, supported by police negotiators, attempted to engage with the man over several hours.

Despite their ongoing efforts, the man presented a weapon shortly after 9.30am on Tuesday, leading police to fire.

Immediate advanced first aid was administered by officers and medical professionals at the scene.

He was pronounced dead shortly before 10.30am.

His next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.

During the incident, several properties were evacuated, but residents are now returning to their homes.

Bedfordshire Police have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has launched an investigation.

A police cordon will remain in place as enquiries continue.

Support at the scene was provided by East of England Ambulance Service, Magpas Air Ambulance crews, and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.
