A murder investigation is underway after human remains discovered in Hoyland have been formally identified as those of Richard Dyson.
The 55-year-old man had been missing from Barnsley since 2019.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed that the remains, found on Monday 14 July at a property on Broadcarr Road in Hoyland, are those of Dyson.
Scenes remain in place at multiple locations, including Dike Hill in Harley and Sheffield Road in Hoyland Common, as detectives continue their inquiries.
A police presence is expected to remain in these areas for the coming weeks.
Dyson was first reported missing in November 2019. Following this tragic development, his family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.
As part of the ongoing investigation, two men aged 72 and 71 were re-arrested on suspicion of murder on 14 July.
The pair had previously been arrested in connection with Dyson’s disappearance and have now been bailed pending further investigation.
Detective Inspector Adam Watkinson said: "Our thoughts today are with Richard Dyson's family on what is an extremely difficult day for everyone who knew and loved him.
"We have supported Richard's loved ones throughout our investigation into his disappearance, and will continue to do so following this tragic news. We're urging the public and members of the media to please respect their privacy at this time.
"Our investigation into Richard’s death is very much ongoing and I'd urge anyone who has information which could help our investigation to share it with us if you have not done so already."
