An 18-day-old baby girl tragically died after suffering a head injury when she fell from a third-floor window in Westminster, central London.

The baby's mother, 43 year old Zahira Byjaouane, has been charged with murder.

The prosecutor, Philip McGhee, shared details of the case in court.

He explained that Byjaouane's husband contacted emergency services at 7.30am, reporting that their child, Mariam, had fallen from a window in their family flat.

London Ambulance Service and police quickly arrived at the scene on Great Peter Street, where they discovered Mariam lying on a concrete surface.

She had fallen approximately 10 metres, or 32 feet, from a sash window, and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Sadly, baby Mariam succumbed to her injuries at 9am, having sustained a skull fracture.

Upon the police's entry into the flat, Byjaouane was found sitting on a bed and was initially arrested for attempted murder, later facing charges of murder.

At the time of the incident, Mariam's father was in the kitchen preparing baby formula.

He reportedly rushed outside following the fall, attempting to reach Mariam before returning inside to call emergency services.

Judge Mark Lucraft KC outlined the schedule for the case, with a plea hearing set for June 3 and a provisional 10-day trial scheduled to commence on 15th February 2027.

Byjaouane remains in custody as the legal proceedings continue.
