Another Amber weather warning for snow is in place for parts of Grampian, Tayside, Perthshire, and the Highlands, with more bad weather expected in the north of Scotland this weekend.

The Met Office is warning low lying areas could see another 5cm of snow, with higher ground getting between 10-30cm.

The fresh warning, which comes into force at 3am on Sunday morning, will last until 6pm on Sunday, and comes after a week of bad weather has seen a major incident declared in Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeenshire Council is running out of hours emergency contacts for hosing repairs, issues with community buildings, homelessness, and social care, but says there is an “improving temperature picture”.

The Amber warning comes as a number of yellow warnings cover the rest of Scotland

Concerns now look to a risk of flooding, as the snow could begin to thaw over the next few days.

The council is encouraging homeowners and businesses to safeguard their property, adding: “For your safety and the safety of others, we also ask that you remain alert to the conditions and do not enter floodwater.

“Parents, guardians, and carers: please talk to your children and young people about the dangers of playing in floodwater and the importance of staying away from flooded areas.”

In the Highlands, additional grit bags have been distributed to locations around Inverness to help local communities.

"Remain vigilant"

Chair of the Economy and Infrastructure Committee Councillor Ken Gowans said: “After an exceptionally challenging spell of winter weather, we know how hard members of the public have been working – and continue to work – to keep their neighbourhoods and local communities as safe as possible with the current forecast.”

“These additional grit supplies are about giving members of the public the tools they need to look after their local area while our road crews continue to focus on priority routes.”

The First Minister has urged the public to “remain vigilant” and is asking people to be aware of the updated weather warning.

"If you need support call the British Red Cross Support Line"

Advice from the Met Office to people in communities which remain largely inaccessible says: “Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night; turn off electrical heaters and put out your fire before going to bed; ensure pets are safe by keeping them warm and comfortable; prevent frozen pipes by opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing; stay indoors, wrap up warm and close internal doors to keep the heat in; and, if you need support call the British Red Cross Support Line on 0808 196 3651.”

The Amber warning comes as a number of Yellow warnings cover the rest of Scotland, including for wind, and snow and ice across the whole country, and rain along the west coast including the Highlands, Dumfries, and Strathclyde.
