Sir Boyd Tunnock was recognised for his contributions to sailing and maritime safety
At 92 years old, the man behind Scotland’s beloved Tunnock’s Teacakes and caramel wafers been honoured by the Royal Navy.
Sir Boyd Tunnock has received a lifetime achievement award for more than 60 years of sailing and his support for lifeboat charities.
The surprise accolade was awarded to the confectioner at a lunch to mark the 90th anniversary of Royal Navy Sailing, who said it was a “testament to Sir Boyd’s unwavering commitment and significant contributions to the realm of sailing.”
Royal Navy Sailing continued: “He has been a steadfast supporter of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), championing maritime safety.”
The organisation said it was a “richly deserved” recognition, adding: “Sir Boyd’s remarkable dedication to this community is evident as is his support of people.”
Speaking after receiving the award, Sir Boyd said: “To be singled out today and get a trophy, and it’s a keeper, it’s not one you hand back!
“It’ll take pride of place in the house.”
He added: “We all like a pat on the back now and again, you do your best to get on with things and be as generous as you can.”
He has been a life long supporter of many sailing events, including West Highland Week, and teams of young sailors heading to national events across the UK, often sending them onto the water with a batch of Teacakes and caramel wafers.
He told Forth 1 where he likes to still spend time on the water: “Tobermory I suppose stands out, because the name just straight away comes up, but if you go out to Canna or go further up north and it’s lovely, but it’s nice too to go somewhere and drop your hook.”
