Investigations are underway at Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh after mould was discovered in bathrooms within a specialist ward.

An environmental review found mould behind wall coverings in the Lochranza ward, which cares for oncology and haematology patients.

Precautionary measures have now been put in place to protect vulnerable children while further checks are carried out. Other bathrooms across the ward are also being inspected.

Health officials say the ward remains open and operating as normal, with no reduction in available rooms. No patients have become unwell, and families have been informed.

The issue is believed to have been caused by a defect between wall and floor coverings, allowing water to seep in behind surfaces. There are no concerns about ventilation, and protective features - including waterproof coverings and filtered air systems - remain in place.

Alison Macdonald, Nurse Director at NHS Lothian, said the situation has been assessed as low risk but is being treated seriously, with enhanced infection control measures and close monitoring.

An incident management team has now been set up to oversee urgent investigations and repair work.
