Eight youths have been charged following an assault on a bus driver outside the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Police say the incident happened around 6.50pm on Sunday on Little France Crescent - where Lothian Buses services stop at the hospital.

A 53-year-old man was attacked by a large group and taken to hospital for treatment.

Two youths were charged at the time, with a further six identified following enquiries - bringing the total to eight.

All of those involved will be reported to the relevant authorities.

Chief Superintendent David Robertson described the incident as an “unprovoked attack on a man who was simply trying to do his job”.

He added: “Violent incidents like this will not be tolerated in our community, and we will ensure that those who engage in this type of behaviour are brought to justice.

“We will continue to work with our partner agencies and would encourage anyone with information or concerns to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
