Edinburgh street evacuated as fire crews battle blaze
Smoke could be seen "across the city"
Residents of a street in Edinburgh were evacuated overnight as fire crews battled a blaze a shop basement.
Six units and around thirty firefighters were called to a commercial unit on Gillespie Place, near Tollcross, at 6:25PM on Saturday, 28 December, 2024.
It's understood to have begun in the basement of Edinburgh Halal Store and spread quickly onto the ground floor.
Posts online say smoke from the incident could be seen bellowing "across the city".
Fire crews left the scene around 2AM on Sunday, 29 December, 2024 - it's unknown if nearby residents have returned to their homes.
A spokesperson for The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire crews were in attendance at a shop fire in Edinburgh on Saturday evening."
"At 6.25pm, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) responded to calls of the building on fire on Gillespie Place."
"six units, including a height appliance, and around thirty firefighters tackled flames in the basement and ground floor of a commercial unit."
They said: "There are no reports of any casualties.
"We left the scene at 02:02 on Sunday, 29 December, 2024."
