100ml liquids rule scrapped at Edinburgh Airport after nearly 20 years
Edinburgh becomes the first Scottish airport to implement the change
The long-standing 100ml liquids rule has officially been lifted at Edinburgh Airport, marking a major change in the security process for passengers.
Thanks to the installation of cutting-edge 3D x-ray scanners, travellers will now be able to leave liquids and large electronic devices in their hand luggage at security - and take bottles up to two litres in size.
It’s the first time the rule has been scrapped in Scotland since its introduction in 2006, and Edinburgh becomes the first Scottish airport to implement the change.
Eight new x-ray machines have been installed as part of a £24 million investment aimed at speeding up and simplifying the airport’s busiest bottleneck.
Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “This is a big day for our passengers and the airport team – we are delighted to be able to lift this rule and really transform the whole security process, making it easier for everyone.”
He added: “A whole generation of travellers have only known the 100ml rule. This change allows more flexibility, all while maintaining and improving our safety standards using 3D technology.”
However, the airport is urging passengers to check rules at their return destination, as not all airports across the UK and beyond have made the same upgrade.
Edinburgh Airport is part of the VINCI Airports network and remains Scotland’s busiest air travel hub.
