Your guide to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
The new Game of Thrones spin-off begins!
Last updated 19th Jan 2026
After the monumental, global success of TV series Game of Thrones, it's no wonder that bosses over at HBO put yet another spin-off series into production. The original show, featuring the likes of Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke, ran from 2011-2019 - and now major fans can enjoy A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Based on the series of novels by George R. R. Martin, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will weave into the storylines we already know from both the original series, and the show's first spin-off House of the Dragon.
When will A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms air?
The new series started on HBO on 18th January 2026, with the first episode arriving on NOW TV on Monday 19th January.
New episodes will drop every Monday.
How can I watch it?
The show will air on HBO Max, and subscribers to NOW TV will also have access to it one day later.
What is it about?
Official press from Warner Bros. read: 'A century before the events of “Game of Thrones,” two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall (Claffey), and his diminutive squire, Egg (Ansell).
'Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.'
Is there a trailer?
The official teaser trailer dropped on Thursday 9th October, giving viewers the first look at Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tal, and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon "Egg" Targaryen.
The trailer was captioned with: 'A tall tale that became legend. The new #GameOfThrones series, #AKnightoftheSevenKingdoms, premieres January 18 on HBO Max'.
HBO released the show's final trailer in December 2025, showing us more of what we can expect from Peter Claffey's Ser Duncan the Tall, AKA "Dunk", and his unlikely relationship with child squire Aegon Targaryen, AKA "Egg", played by Dexter Sol Ansell.
Of course, fans were utterly thrilled with the trailer, as many took to social media to share their anticipation for the series. One wrote: 'This trailer feels like early Game of Thrones in the best possible way,' as another added: 'GODS THE WRITING LOOKS STRONG,' while one more commented: 'I have a feeling this is gonna be my new favourite.'
Will there be a second series?
Not only did we get to indulge in the new trailer, but Variety are also reporting that season two is already on the way - with the cast and crew set to go into production in Belfast next week. The publication has said that the second season will air in 2027 following the first season's release date in January 2026.
A HBO Max‘s presentation on 3rd December heard Showrunner Ira Parker discuss the upcoming show: "I think we can all find a lot to relate to our one new character Ser Duncan the Tall, certainly I put a lot of myself into him.
"He’s treading in this strange world. He’s from the a-- end s------e of Westeros, the slums of Westeros, of King’s Landing and he doesn’t know anyone and he doesn’t know anything so all of these lords and ladies and princes and kings and queens that he encounters, it all seems a little absurd to him and he doesn’t quite know if people are making fun of him or not and a lot of good natural comedy comes out of the situation."
Who is in the cast?
Irish actor and former rugby player Peter Claffey will play Ser Duncan the Tall - aptly cast, as he is an impressive 6ft 5in, according to his IMDb profile! His prior work includes Bad Sisters and Wreck, with upcoming roles in Small Things Like These with Cillian Murphy and the third season of Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix.
We also know that his little sidekick, Prince Aegon "Egg" Targaryen, will be played by Dexter Sol Ansell, whose previous credits already include Emmerdale, The Midwich Cuckoos and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes among plenty of others - despite him being only 11-years-old.

How does it link with the original Game of Thrones series?
As with all Game of Thrones family trees, this one is also a little complicated - but we know that Prince Aegon, or "Egg", is the younger brother of Aemon Targaryen, who abdicated the throne to join the Night's Watch - AKA Maester Aemon, the blind elderly man who takes a shine to Samwell Tarly in the original series and passes away calling for his brother, Egg.
Without giving too much away, Prince Aegon becomes King Aegon V, succeeded by his son Jaehaerys, who in turn is succeeded by his own son, Aerys - also referred to in the original series as "The Mad King", who is the father of Daenerys Targaryen and her two brothers, Rhaegar and Viserys.
Viewers will remember Viserys as that rather annoying elder brother to Daenerys, who essentially sold her off to the Dothraki - but ended up meeting his rather nasty end at the hands of his sister's new husband, Karl Drogo.
Rhaegar ended up being the secret father of Jon Snow, whose mother was Lyanna Stark - sister of Ned Stark.
