Rangers captain James Tavernier has confirmed he will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

The defender posted a long message on Instagram and said choosing to depart after 11 seasons "hasn't been an easy decision".

"This club has been a huge part of my life and my family's over the past 11 years," he said.

"It's given me so much, both on and off the pitch and from the moment I arrived, I've always tried to give everything I had to represent it in the right way.

"To have had the honour of being made captain of this club since 2018 is something I will always be incredibly proud of.

"Leading this team out, wearing the armband and being trusted in that role has meant more to me that I can properly put into words."

The 34-year-old added: "There is still a season to finish and we are fully focused on pushing for the league title."

"I will continue to give absolutely everything, as I always have until the very last day.

"My focus right now is on finishing this season the right way, together."

Rangers are in a three-way battle to win the league title, with Hearts one point ahead and defending champions Celtic two behind the Ibrox outfit with five games remaining.

The Englishman was signed in 2015 by then-manager Mark Warburton, with the club still in the Championship.

He helped the club win that league and the Challenge Cup in his first campaign.

Tavernier was handed the captaincy in 2018 and led the club to an unbeaten title in 2021 under Steven Gerrard.

The right-back also lifted the Scottish Cup and the League Cup, and guided his side to the Europa League final in 2022.

To date he has made 562 appearances, scoring 144 goals.
