Rangers have broken their silence after last weekend's Old Firm pitch invasion at Ibrox, supporting an independent review into the events surrounding the match.

Celtic won the Scottish Cup quarter-final 4-2 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes.

Visiting supporters initially encroached onto the pitch from the Broomloan Road stand, which was sold out to a capacity of 7,500 Celtic fans, before stewards attempted to usher them back to their seats.

Home fans also made their way onto the park, leading to some clashes.

Several supporters, police officers and stewards were injured in the melee, including a 10-year-old boy who was struck by a coin, whilst other objects and flares were thrown between the two sides.

Rangers' statement said they will work closely with the authorities and will take appropriate sanctions against any identified individuals.

The club have also condemned graffiti referencing the Ibrox disaster, where 66 people lost their lives, labelling it "vile" and "cowardly".

The Scottish FA also released a statement this afternoon, which confirmed that the Compliance Officer is collating evidence from the game and commissioned the independent review on the safety and security operations to ensure there is no repeat of the events.

Police Scotland announced on Monday that an inquiry had been opened into the game and accused both clubs of failing to condemn the violent scenes.

The Police insisted they did have enough staff at the match despite the chaos.

Celtic are still yet to comment.
