Martin O'Neill has agreed a one-year deal to become the permanent manager of Celtic.

It's understood the 74-year old has won the race to take over next season after winning the Premiership and Scottish Cup double while in interim charge last season.

O'Neill has shaken hands on an initial one-year deal with the option of a further year after holding talks in London with principle shareholder Dermot Desmond.

Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham are expected to continue to assist the Northern Irishman.

It comes 26 years on from O'Neill's first appointment as Parkhead boss.

He took the reins in 2000 and won three top flight titles, three Scottish Cups and one League Cup across his five-year spell.

The club also reached the UEFA Cup final in 2003 under his stewardship.
