A woman has appeared in court accused of murdering her pensioner aunt at her home in Hamilton.

Louise Markson, 51, is charged killing Susan Sergison at the property in January this year.

It is alleged the 78-year-old had her hair pulled as well as being repeatedly punched and kicked.

The indictment further states Markson stamped and jumped on the OAP.

Miss Sergison is also said to have been repeatedly struck with "blunt and sharp-edged implements" as well as a mug.

Markson is accused of forcing part of a pen through her aunt's eyelid.

Prosecutors claim Miss Sergison was robbed of a quantity of jewellery during the alleged attack.

Markson faces a separate charge of attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

It is said she got rid of a mobile phone to "conceal and destroy evidence" allegedly connecting her to the killing.

The case called at the High Court in Glasgow today.

Markson is currently in the State Hospital at Carstairs.

Callum Hiller, defending, tendered a plea that his client was not fit to stand trial.

He said: "Both documents lodged to the court are supportive of the plea.

"There is also a defence report.

"The proposal is to fix a continued preliminary hearing and an evidential hearing in January."

The hearing will determine whether Markson will be fit for trial.

Judge Lord Renucci KC said: "It is not competent to fix an examination of facts as there is no finding.

"This trial can be converted to an examination of facts.

"I will fix a continued preliminary hearing and a half day for an evidential hearing for Miss Markson's fitness for trial in January at the High Court in Glasgow.

"I will fix a seven-day trial date that can be converted to an examination of facts if required for November 2026."
