A fireball lit up the night sky in Clydebank after a van packed with fireworks was deliberately torched, forcing emergency evacuations and a major police response.

The incident unfolded around 1am on Sunday, 23 February, on Braes Avenue, when emergency services rushed to the scene of the blazing vehicle.

As a precaution, nearby buildings were evacuated, and roads were locked down while firefighters battled the blaze. No injuries were reported.

Detectives are now on the hunt for a man who was spotted making off towards the canal path around the time of the fire.

He is described as white, in his 30s, of slim build, with a shaved head, and was wearing a dark hooded jacket and dark trousers.

Detective Constable Andrew Baldacci of Clydebank CID issued an urgent appeal: “I’m appealing for anyone who has information about this man, or the man himself, to come forward.

“I’d also ask anyone who saw what happened or has any information about the incident, and has not already spoken to police, to contact us.

“Similarly, if you have private CCTV, doorbell, or dashcam footage from the area, please review this and bring anything of significance to our attention.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference number 0246 of 23 February.

Alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
