More than 100,000 households across Scotland have been left without power as hurricane force winds from Storm Éowyn batter the country, with the south-west taking the brunt.

The Met Office red weather warning is due to expire at 5pm but First Minister John Swinney has urged people to continue to heed warnings during the "exceptional weather event", saying a "high level of vigilance" is still required.

A gust of 100mph was recorded at Drumalbin in South Lanarkshire early on Friday afternoon - the strongest gust so far in the UK , the Met Office said.

Police Scotland have so far had to deal with 11 overturned HGVs, including one which blocked the northbound M74 from junction 13 to 11.

First Minister John Swinney told Clyde 1 News: "The warnings were absolutely crystal clear that is was only essential travel which was to be undertaken so I'm deeply concerned by the number of lorries which were on the road, and the dangers to drivers who in many circumstances would have no alternative but to do what their employers are asking them to do."

Debris danger

Trains have been suspended across the country and hundreds of schools are shut, with vehicles blown over and roads closed in some areas due to debris.

Parts of the Gallowgate and Shettleston have been closed because of an unsafe building and fallen masonry.

Officers have also closed off Union Street in the centre of Glasgow because of unsafe scaffolding.

Trampolines are starting to fly in Partick!

Football games in doubt

Celtic's game against Dundee on Saturday is in doubt due to Storm Eowyn.

The club have said that parts of their stadium have been damaged due to the extreme weather, with the severity still being assessed.

Celtic will make a final assessment on the situation tomorrow morning.
