One person is in hospital after a fire broke out at sheltered housing in Newton Mearns on Friday morning.

Six fire crews were sent to Mearnsview Court on Broomburn Drive around 10.34am on July 18, where the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) say they found a “well developed fire” in a second floor flat of the three storey building.

An SFRS spokesperson said: “Operations Control initially mobilised four appliances to the scene.

"Resources were increased by a further two appliances and specialist resources to a well developed fire affecting a second floor flat of a three-storey building.

“A number of casualties have been handed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews remain at the scene."

Four people were also treated by paramedics at the scene, a spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 10:45 to attend an incident on Broomburn Drive, Newton Mearns. We dispatched three ambulances, two special operations response teams (SORT), one paramedic response unit (PRU), and two managers to the scene.

“We transported one patient to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the force was called to the scene at around 10.50am, adding: "Officers are in attendance to assist Scottish Fire and Rescue Service."
