Police launch murder probe after 35-year-old man dies in Douglas

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was killed during an incident in Douglas, near Lanark.

Joe Buchanan, 35, died at the scene on Springhill Street shortly after emergency services were called around 8.35pm on Sunday, 13 April.

His family have been informed, and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Police Scotland say the incident appears to have been targeted, with no wider risk to the public.

Detective Inspector Mark McGraw, of the Major Investigation Team, said: "This appears to have been a targeted incident and we do not believe there is any risk to the wider public.

"Extensive police enquiries are ongoing at this time, including the gathering of CCTV from the surrounding area and door-to-door inquiries."

He added: "From what we understand, an incident took place on Springhill Street. Emergency services attended, however Joe was pronounced dead at the scene."

Officers are appealing for witnesses and any relevant footage taken in the area between 8.20pm and 8.40pm on Sunday night.

"I would ask anyone who was in the Springhill Street area on Sunday night, who has not yet been in contact with police but who witnessed the incident or has any information that may assist officers, to get in touch with us," DI McGraw said.

A police presence will remain in the area in the coming days to provide reassurance to residents.

Inspector Mark Chivers said: "We will have a continued police presence in the area, and I would like to reassure the local community that everything is being done to trace those responsible."

Joe Buchanan’s family released a statement thanking those who have offered their support:

"Joe had a heart of gold, and we would appeal to anyone who has any information to come forward. We would also ask that our privacy is respected at this difficult time."
