Man dies after being hit by car while walking on A71 in Irvine

Police were called to reports of a man walking on the road on Wednesday evening, and found the 49-year-old dead at the scene

A 49-year-old man has died after he was hit by a car on the A71 in Irvine.

Police were called to reports of a man walking along the road between the Greenwood Interchange and Corsehill Mount roundabout at around 6.45pm on Wednesday.

When officers arrived they discovered the 49-year-old had been hit by a silver Audi A1.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and his family has been informed.

The 36-year-old female driver of the car was uninjured.

The road was closed to allow for crash investigations to take place and reopened around 1.40am on Thursday.

Sergeant Brian Simpson of Ayrshire Roads Policing Unit said: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died at this very difficult time.

“Our enquiries into the exact circumstances of the collision are continuing and I’d like to appeal to anyone who saw what happened, or who saw the pedestrian or car beforehand, to contact us.

“I would ask drivers with dashcam footage of the A71 in the Irvine area around 6.45pm yesterday, to please review your footage and bring anything of significance to our attention.”
