A man from Grangemouth has been banned from keeping animals for five years after six wolfdogs were found living in what inspectors described as “appalling” conditions.

Graham Alexander McQuet was also fined £2,000 after appearing at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Friday.

The court heard he failed to provide adequate care for the animals, including sufficient water, space and a suitable environment. One wolfdog had a painful, untreated neck wound caused by the inappropriate use of a shock collar.

Scottish SPCA inspectors said all of the animals were wearing both shock and tracking collars when they attended the property alongside Police Scotland.

They also discovered the body of a dead wolfdog in a freezer inside the house.

Inspector Fiona Thorburn said the animals “did not look or behave like domesticated animals” and appeared to be controlled rather than properly trained.

Five of the wolfdogs were later rehomed to a specialist sanctuary in Wiltshire, where staff described them as “unsocialised, terrified, injured and in poor body condition”.

One remaining dog and a pet cat were removed by the Scottish SPCA and have since been rehomed.

Inspectors said the property itself was in an extremely poor condition, and officers also uncovered a cannabis cultivation during the investigation.

The charity says while the animals have recovered physically, they may suffer long-term behavioural effects due to their treatment.

Following the case, the Scottish SPCA is calling for a national register of animal cruelty offenders to help monitor those banned from keeping animals.
