Man convicted after Glasgow mum dies following row over missing watch
Jurors heard a series of threats and assaults preceded the death of Patricia Irvine in Parkhead
A man has been convicted of culpable homicide after a woman died following a row over a missing watch in Parkhead, Glasgow.
Tony Grimes, 43, was found guilty following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.
Patricia Irvine, 53, suffered an aneurysm after the confrontation on 12th May 2024 and died two days later in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Grimes will be sentenced next month.
The court heard Grimes accused Patricia's 25-year-old son, Jordan Wilson, of taking a watch that had been a gift for Grimes's first Father's Day, which Jordan strenuously denied.
Jurors were told Grimes went on to target Jordan and his family, with threats on social media and at their door.
In a police interview, Jordan said he was left “frightened” and “intimidated”, claiming he was left too scared to walk the streets and would get a taxi most places.
Jurors were also shown CCTV of Grimes attacking Jordan in a shop in the east end of Glasgow. Grimes pled guilty to that charge.
On the night Patricia was injured, the court heard a drinks can was thrown at Jordan and his mum outside their home. Grimes was also said to have threatened to "petrol bomb" the property. Jordan had gone back inside when Grimes ran at Patricia, who fell and hit her head.
In cross-examination, Jordan rejected a suggestion from defence counsel Brian McConnachie KC that he and his mum had sparked the confrontation.
Jordan – who told police he was a “die hard” Rangers supporter – further denied previously making sectarian remarks to Celtic fan Grimes, insisting it was Grimes who instead was guilty of that.
After the verdict, the court heard Grimes, now of Tollcross in Glasgow, had a lengthy list of previous convictions, including for weapons, police assault, religiously aggravated breach of the peace and other violence.
Judge Lord Mulholland refused to continue bail. He said: “You have been convicted of culpable homicide and, by a plea of guilty, of a horrific, unprovoked assault. I saw the footage.
“You have a criminal record that does you no favours. I am refusing you bail."
The case was deferred until next month for reports.
