Glasgow's Christmas lights are on the move this year with George Square closed for refurbishment. Instead of the traditional Christmas light switch on, Sauchiehall, Buchanan and Argyle Streets are going to be transformed by displays designed by local people.
There will be street performers to kick off the festive season as the trail is illuminated for the first time on the 20th of November at 6pm. People can watch as the lights go on from anywhere along the trail.
Every other evening through to 3 January 2026 the lights will be switched on at 4pm.
Talented local artists have created five glittering light installations.
Ellie Mills and Alice Brown took inspiration from Glasgow’s iconic neon signs and love of blethering. They invited local communities to share funny and nostalgic stories of what Christmas means to them, then translated those stories into Bright City, a series of glowing animations projected onto Sauchiehall Street.
Sandaig Primary School in Barlanark won a school’s competition to see their design created in light. Sandaig Primary pupil, Roza, aged 11 will see her dazzling display, complete with twinkling Christmas trees and enchanting snowmen, spread festive cheer as it illuminates Sauchiehall Street.
Mrs Clark, Head Teacher: “We’re delighted that Roza’s design will light up Sauchiehall Street this Christmas. Seeing her creativity sparkle will be a magical moment for the whole school and something we are all incredibly proud of. The children will remember this for years to come.”
The façade of Glasgow Royal Concert Hall will display Constellations by artist Domme Ewan, transforming the façade into a night sky
Jamie Wardrop’s Let Glasgow Flourish installation will be projected inside five windows of the historic Buck’s Head Building on Argyle Street. This animated visual sequence celebrates Glasgow’s natural life with colourful birds and festive evergreens of ivy, pine, and holly.
A vision of starry angels will be projected over the Mercat Building on High Street, designed by Kate Robinson.
Glasgow’s Lord Provost, Jacqueline McLaren, said: “Turning on Glasgow’s Christmas lights is one of the highlights of the year, and this year it’s even more exciting as we unveil a brand-new trail that will bathe the centre in festive light. As Glasgow celebrates its 850th anniversary, welcoming families, and friends into the city centre to enjoy this special moment makes it even more memorable.”
This year, Glasgow’s main festive activities will take place at Glasgow Green and St Enoch Square. Glasgow Green will feature a Big Top and ice rink as well as fairground rides and food.
