A former Clyde 1 reporter who persuaded a woman not to take her own life at sea near Orkney two years ago has received an award by the Chief Constable of Police Scotland.

Linda Sinclair was near Inganess Beach when she spotted the female in a distressed state in the water and alerted the police.

Quick thinking

She told Clyde 1: "At first, my sister and I approached her and took her out the water together - she was clearly really upset.

"But within a few moments she went back into the water and waded out further.

"I knew the police sergeant who had come out to the scene because I had interviewed him for a story before and I asked him if he would stop me from going in.

"He checked I was a strong swimmer and told me he would shout if I got too far out."

Last night, Linda was invited to a ceremony at Police Scotland's headquarters in Tulliallan where she was given the Bravery and Excellence Award by Jo Farrell.

This is the second time she has been recognised for saving the woman's life after getting another gong from the Royal Humane Society last year.

She added: "I never found out the lady's name so I don't know how she is doing.

"The main thing is I hope she is okay now."

Recognising those who've put themselves at risk

Chief Constable Jo Farrell said: “Every year, these awards highlight the bravery and excellence that is shown day-in and day-out throughout Scotland.

"They remind us all of the incredible work our colleagues and members of the public do to keep our communities safe and thriving, often putting themselves in the face of danger to save someone else.

“Reading the nominations, powerful illustrations of bravery and inspiring examples of skill, professionalism and dedication, has been a great pleasure and a real highlight of my year."
