The loved ones of a Dumfries woman found dead in the water in Greece in 2009 are appealing a decision not to prosecute a man questioned by police over her death.

Jean Hanlon's body was found in the sea off the Crete town of Heraklion after she'd been missing for days.

Her son, Michael Porter, hired a private investigator last year who identified a suspect who'd been in a brief relationship with the 53-year-old.

He told Clyde 1: "It's emotionally draining and sometimes you forget who you are and what it's actually about - this is my mum who's never coming back."

The suspect was arrested back in January before the charges were later dropped after the prosecutor told the family's lawyer there was insufficient evidence to charge him.

They were given just ten days to appeal this decision and a more senior prosecutor will make a final call.

Michael added: "This is heartbreaking and devastating.

"Having read the prosecutor's proposal, I think it's contradictory because it even states there is evidence against him.

"The system is completely different out in Greece, everything is done very slowly whenever it suits the authorities.

"Greek police close unsolved murder cases after 20 years and we are getting closer to that anniversary and I don't know if we'll ever get the answers we need."
