East Ayrshire child rapist has prison sentence extended after appeal
36-year-old Ryan Brown will now spend 11 years behind bars for raping a 10-year-old girl and sexually assaulting a young boy

A rapist and abuser who targeted two young children in East Ayrshire over a period of nearly a decade, has had his sentence increased following a successful appeal by the Crown.
Ryan Brown, 36, raped a 10-year-old girl who was in his care at a property in Drongan between November 2019 and March 2020.
He also forced a boy, aged between 4 and 6, to participate in sexual activity between April 2011 and 2013.
Appeal Court found sentence 'unduly lenient'
Brown was jailed in July 2024 for 7 years.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service asked the court to consider imposing a longer custodial term due to the serious nature of the offences.
The Appeal Court upheld the Crown appeal, and the original sentence has been quashed and replaced with a 14-year extended sentence, including 11 years behind bars.
Kenny Donnelly, Deputy Crown Agent for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said:
“COPFS is committed to improving the criminal justice journey for victims, from the stage of reporting all the way through to sentencing.
“Prosecutors have a responsibility in legislation to consider appeals based upon undue leniency in sentencing.
Sentence 'should reflect harm caused by sexual offending'
"Such appeals are rare but important to ensure the public interest is properly served.
"They allow the court to review sentences that the Crown believe fall outside the range of punishment reasonably considered appropriate.
"COPFS believes that it is important that the harm caused by sexual offending, and the culpability of the convicted person, must be consistently reflected in sentencing decisions.”
