Bishopbriggs car thief asked mechanic to fix vehicle while on run

An man from East Dunbartonshire who stole a car asked a mechanic to fix it while on the run from the police.

Darren Stack, 29, nicked the Nissan Juke from a property in Bishopbriggs, on April 19 2025.

Stack later attended a garage and requested that the motor's flat tyre be fixed after officers had been informed about the theft.

Stack then raced off in the damaged vehicle after the mechanic asked him to wait for the car to be repaired.

He went on to damage another vehicle and offered the car owner cash for him to repair the scratch to his door.

Stack pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to housebreaking, theft and dangerous driving.

The court heard that Evelyn Robinson discovered that her handbag, car key and her vehicle missing from her home.

Miss Robinson contacted the police who later informed her that he business cards and handbag had been found.

Stack later attended a Quick Fit garage in Glasgow with the vehicle.

Prosecutor Jacky Wall said: "He asked the mechanic if he could fix the punctured tyre for cash.

"He was told to leave the car for a short while but he re-entered the vehicle and drove at speed to Fenwick Road and to Giffnock train station with the flat tyre.

"Stack entered the car park at excessive speed."

Stack - who hit a dead end - reversed at speed at struck James Fisher's Mercedes Sprinter which caused a scratch to the front door.

Stack then spoke to Mr Fisher and offered him cash to repair the damage.

He went on to reverse at speed again out of the car park.

The vehicle was found abandoned by the police who were able to get a description of Stack.

Officers discovered Stack walking away from the vehicle and found him to smell of alcohol.

A police system check found him to be a disqualified driver.

Sentence was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff Barry Divers who continued Stack's remand in custody meantime.

The sheriff said: "Custody is at the forefront of my mind for this matter."
