When Ed Sheeran and Martin Garrix teamed up earlier this year to release their song 'Repeat It', 12 years after they first started working on it, they probably didn't envisage crashing a fan's wedding to perform it, but that's exactly what they did recently.

Sharing the video on Instagram, Ed explains how Martin received a DM from a fan saying: 'Martin and Team - my sister is getting married at the Chicago planetarium this weekend on Saturday, during Martin's show at Northerly Island. Which is actually a few hundred feet from the show venue. You pass the planetarium on your way out :)

'She is bummed she cannot make the show, so I was wondering if Martin could walk over to the planetarium for a 5 minute visit after his performance to congratulate my sister and perhaps mix in one song on the DJ decks.

'Overall it would be a 10–15 minute detour from your itinerary.

'Thanks if someone read this!'

Martin then replies: 'I'll swing by do you have a contact at the venue so one of my security can come and advance'.

Before adding: 'and what time does the party start / what time does it end'.

Ed and Martin can then be seen jumping in a car after finishing a gig, and heading to the wedding being held in an amazing location, the Chicago planetarium. At the venue, the pair meet Mike (who wrote the DM), who says: "Well! Got my friends Martin here and Ed, they decided to crash my sister's wedding."

The camera then follows them into the planetarium, where the duo's song 'Repeat It' is playing, before Ed and Martin walk in to the wedding guests' surprise, and Ed picks up the microphone and starts to sing.

After the pair shared the video fans have been taking to the comments to leave excited messages, one wrote: 'best.wedding.ever!!! You guys are true legends 🙌', (sic) with another saying: 'imagine opening your wedding album and seeing this 🥹❤️'.

One more fan wrote: '15 mins out of your day. Lifetime of memories for a random person. Legends 🔥'.

Ed Sheeran is currently on his 'Loop Tour' in North America, while Martin Garrix is on his own tour, which has included gigs in Chicago.

The pair released their song 'Repeat It' earlier this year, 12 years after they first wrote the song together. Releasing the song just before his 30th birthday, Martin opened up about it saying: "To be announcing and releasing this single around my 30th birthday feels incredibly special, honestly the best gift I could’ve wished for. We actually started this song 12 years ago in Nashville, and for the longest time I genuinely thought it would never be an official release.

"So to finally be here now feels really surreal, and I couldn’t be more excited for people to hear the new version. Working with Ed has been so much fun. He’s an incredible human, artist, but also one of my dear friends from the industry. We’ve shared so many cool memories over the years. I’m really proud that we finally get to release this together, this song means a lot to both of us!"

Ed added: "Me and Martin made 'Repeat It' 12 years ago after we made friends on a night out in Amsterdam. He turns 30 today, and is putting out his debut album this year, so seemed like a better time than any to finally do it. I’d say every day fans leave comments under my posts asking where it is, so this one is for you guys. Happy Birthday Martin, and happy 'Repeat It' day for everyone else. Enjoy the video, it's clips from both our lives over the last 12 years."
