Storm Éowyn Latest: 122mph gusts recorded near Saltcoats

Schools closed and flights cancelled as people warned to stay at home

Saltcoats has recorded gusts of 122mph as Storm Éowyn hits Ayrshire.

Earlier, Girvan experienced gusts of 108mph as the peak of the storm landed in South Ayrshire.

The actual winds -not gusts - in Girvan are 60mph - anything over 73mph, according to the Beaufort Scale, is considered hurricane force.

Storm Éowyn has already wreaked havoc this morning, with schools closed and Scotrail cancelling all trains across Scotland.

Just before 10am, Network Rail reported fallen tree damaging overhead lines near to Kilwinning Train Station.

While there, the recovery team found a wall had also been blown over.

Online, there are reports of a road in Lochwinnoch blocked due to fallen trees.

Ayrshire Roads Alliance have said roads across the region have been closed because of the storm.

Roads in Prestwick, Kilmaurs, Monkton, Troon, Ayr, Kilmarnock and Dundonald are all currently not accessible to motorists.

In Arran, Police have reported the sea wall at Whitefarland has partially collapsed, blocking the road from Blackwaterfoot to Lochranza with rock debris.

People across Scotland have been urged to stay indoors after the Met Office issued a red danger to life warning for wind on Friday.
