Manhunt launched after prisoner fails to return to HMP Castle Huntly

James Fitzpatrick was last spotted in the Irvine area, and may have boarded a bus to Ardrossan

An extensive search is underway to locate a prisoner who did not return to HMP Castle Huntly in Dundee following an allowed visit.

James Fitzpatrick, who has connections in Ayrshire, was reported missing to police on 30th December 2025 after failing to come back as required.

Police describe Fitzpatrick as white, 36-year-old, approximately five feet and eight inches tall, of stocky build, with short brown hair.

He was last seen wearing a black Nike tracksuit featuring white stripes along the arms and legs. He was carrying a yellow JD Sports bag along with a black holdall bag.

According to police, Fitzpatrick’s last known location was Irvine town centre at around 11.20am on 29th December.

He is believed to have boarded a bus heading towards Ardrossan.

Police have advised members of the public not to approach Fitzpatrick but instead to contact 999 and quote reference number 2717 of 29th December 2025.
