Work to repair a section of the A78 between Largs and Skelmorlie hanging by a thread after Storm Boelo last month is expected to continue into the new year.
Staff at Amey need to fill around twenty voids which have left the road unstable.
The trunk road is closed to all-through traffic forcing drivers to take a long diversion which turns a 10-minute journey into a two hour round trip.
Special convoy arrangements are in place for people with homes within the closure zone and for school buses to take pupils to the high school in Largs.
Network manager for Amey for the South West of Scotland Nick Russell told Clyde 1: "Earth and rocks underneath the road have been washed away leaving around 20 voids.
"They need to be filled otherwise it could collapse into the sea.
"Normally in storms there is a small section of the road damaged by trees which have come down but I've never seen a sea wall so badly affected."
Nick and his team are still assessing the full extent of the damage before proper repair work can begin but they hope to eventually be able to re-open the road with a traffic light control system.
He added: "The road is floating at the moment because the rocks are washed away so we need to get that repaired before it can be safe to travel on.
"The plan would be to have a small convoy system running to let traffic move between Largs and Skelmorlie once again but I can't put a timescale on when that will be."
