Super Furry Animals made history on Thursday night (2nd July) when they performed their sublime Welsh language album ‘Mwng’ in its glorious entirety for the first time.

Released to widespread critical acclaim in May 2000, ‘Mwng’ was the first Welsh language album to dent the Top 20 in the UK, and the chart feat was even praised in the Houses of Parliament by MP Elfyn Llwyd.

Having played their first live shows in a decade back in May, Super Furry Animals headlined TK Maxx presents Live at Llangollen Pavilion in North Wales on Thursday and treated fans to a very different setlist.

Flanked by a horn section, the psychedelic quintet were largely swathed in darkness as they performed ‘Mwng’ impeccably from start to finish, including a vivacious ‘Ysbeidiau Heulog’ (Sunny Intervals), firm SFA classic ‘Ymaelodi Â'r Ymylon’, and the spine-tingling, trumpet-led set closer ‘Gwreiddiau Dwfn / Mawrth Oer Ar Y Blaned Neifion.’

Frontman Gruff Rhys spoke to the audience in Welsh throughout the 45-minute rendition, while the ‘Mwng’ track ‘Sarn Helen’ had its very first live outing.

After the unique ‘Mwng’ set, the Super Furries then exploded into colour with a euphoric ‘Hello Sunshine’ that saw the Llangollen crowd sing back the classic lines “I'm a minger, You're a minger too” with glee.

The second set also included a rousing rendition of stone-cold ‘Radiator’ classic ‘Demons’, the steel drum-tastic ‘Northern Lites’ and techno-soaked banger ‘Slow Life’.

As always, Super Furry Animals ended their triumphant Llangollen show with an epic and barnstorming ‘The Man Don’t Give A F---’ that saw the band don their infamous yeti outfits.

The stellar support acts on the night were fellow Welsh acts Panic Shack and Melin Melyn, completing a celebration of Welsh music at one of the country's most distinctive and historic live music venues.
