We all know that Ella's an incredibly talented singer and guitarist, but she's also the brains behind her songs too - using her songwriting skills to pen the hits we know and love. Here, we take a look at some of the meanings behind the lyrics of her most beloved tracks.

What do Ella Langley's songs mean?

'Choosin' Texas' (2025)

Although she'd already been working hard, it was 'Choosin' Texas' that really shot Ella Langley into the limelight. Co-written with country music legend Miranda Lambert, 'Choosin' Texas' was released as a single on 17th October 2025 and appeared on Ella's second album, 'Dandelion', released in April 2026 - but no-one was prepared for where this song would take her.

Not only was 'Choosin' Texas' atop the Country UK charts for a hugely impressive total of 12 non-consecutive weeks, but it even crossed the genre divide over to the mainstream charts - hitting Number 1 in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand simultaneously. It's even been certified Platinum in the UK with over 600,000 units.

'Weren't for the Wind' (2025)

Ella's emotive track 'Weren't for the Wind' was a major crossover hit. The heart-rending melody and stirring harmonies of the track hit both the country fans and the pop fans right in the chest - so it's no surprise that Ella got a Number 1 on the UK Country Airplay chart as well as Number 18 in the mainstream US charts for 'Weren't for the Wind'.

The UK Silver-certified track was co-written with Johnny Clawson and Joybeth Taylor, and centres on Ella's inherent unwillingness to stay in one place too long. She appears to want to settle down and stay put, maybe even have a family - but her innate longing to travel and perform surpasses that more stable desire.

We can hear this in the lyrics of the first verse, where she sings about having 'said a few goodbyes', adding that although she often makes promises with the intent to keep them, she's 'bound to change my mind' - even citing her ever-changing decisions as being as temperamental as the weather. On another relationship ending, she sings: 'Might've been different in a different life.'

In the chorus, she sings that in another life: 'Maybe I'd settle down, dig in some roots / Find me a farmhouse, find me a you,' but goes on to sing that she'd 'be already gone again / If it weren't for the wind.'

The second verse gives us a deeper insight into what drives Ella to keep moving: 'I wouldn't stay wonderin' what's out there / I wouldn't saddle up on a breeze / I wouldn't disappear out of thin air / I could put down these wings.'

The song is framed as being an unsuitable life for a particular relationship in the music video, in which she stars alongside Kade Hafner as well as having co-directed it. We see Ella becoming engaged at the start, then performing on stage while her partner becomes jealous. She receives a letter to sign a recording contract which is intercepted by the fiancé who bins it, before Ella discovers it and leaves.

Ella spoke to Country Now about the song in 2025, revealing that she'd been inspired by the landscape of Wyoming in the US: "It’s all this beautiful land. It’s just flat. There’s horses everywhere. Every time I drive through Wyoming, there’s always one moment where there’s this horse running alongside of whatever I’m in. I’m like, love that.

"So I feel like it’s just these western-y type vibes. And I don’t know, that one just kind of fell out. I can’t even remember who brought in that title. I don’t even think we had a title for it. The song just fell out that way."

'You Look Like You Love Me' - featuring Riley Green (2024)

This steamy collaboration set the country world on fire! Teaming up with Riley Green, Ella put out 'You Look Like You Love Me' in June 2024, and it also appeared on her debut album, 'Hungover'. The single went to the top spot on the US country chart, making Number 30 on the US mainstream chart - and even got to Number 59 on the UK's mainstream chart, too.

Ella won five major country awards for the romantic song - Musical Event of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards 2024; Single of the Year, Visual Media of the Year and Music Event of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards 2025; and Video of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards 2025. It's even been certified Gold in the UK.

It's pretty safe to say that this is the song that really made people start to take notice of Ella and her incredible singing and songwriting talents. While you may not have to dig too deep to understand what this song is saying, it's incredibly catchy - and fairly easy to sing along to!

With the verses featuring spoken word from Ella in the first and Riley in the second, the song paints a picture of two people who have an instant connection in the moment where their eyes meet.

Ella's verse tells the story from her character's perspective; being at a bar and having had a few tipples already, when someone walks in the door that makes her stop and stare: 'Well, I saw him walk in / With his cowboy hat / And I thought to myself / I could use some of that.'

The chorus lyrics are: 'Excuse me / You look like you love me / You look like you want me / To want you to come on home / Baby, I don't blame you / For lookin' me up and down across this room / I'm drunk and I'm ready to leave / And you look like you love me.'

Then Riley's characters tells it from his perspective in the second verse: 'She was the prettiest thing I'd ever seen in a pair of boots / Well, she walk right up to me, handed me a beer / Gave me a look like, let's get outta here / And that's when I realised that she was every cowboy's dream come true.'

Ella said in a press release of the song: 'I'm obsessed with this song, I think it's so fun. I first wrote it with Aaron Ratiere, and then Riley came in and wrote the second verse. It's a cute little love song and hopefully it'll be someone's wedding song one day.'

Riley told Holler in an interview: "The song with Ella was one of those things that can only happen out on the road, out on tour, just really organically. I heard the song, and I think she kinda thought maybe it would be a good collaboration with somebody, so I wrote a second verse for it. It's just a really fun song. She does a great job with it."

'Don't Mind If I Do' - Riley Green featuring Ella Langley (2025)

Ella and Riley teamed up once again for 'Don't Mind If I Do', proving that whatever they collectively touch really does turn to gold. Riley wrote the track while on tour with Ella in 2024, and asked her to sing the duet section as a reference... Before later realising that no-one could do it better!

'Don't Mind If I Do' was released in July 2025, going to Number 1 on the US Country Airplay chart and making it to Number 23 on the mainstream chart. The song was also the title track of his third album, which was released in October 2024.

The song follows a former couple who are getting on ok without each other... Until they have a couple of drinks and allow themselves to start thinking about the other and their past relationship. The song opens with: 'I've been doin' better, I hardly ever think of you, lately,' before going on to: 'When you cross my mind, I start missin' you like crazy.'

The wistful chorus then details how Riley's character has a desire to show up at the other person's house, before completely opening up truthfully with: 'If you wanna know the truth, it's killin' me not holdin' you right now / I'm one memory away from fallin' all the way apart / 'Cause I might still love you / Hope you don't mind if I do.'

Ella rounds the song off from the other person's perspective: 'Well, I don't mind if you do / Drink a little too much and show up at my house / Be nice to hear the truth / Is it killin' you not holdin' me right now? / If fallin' into me is the only thing you think is gonna get you through / Then I don't mind if you do.'

Riley told us about how he got Ella on the song: "I wrote 'Don't Mind If I Do' as a duet. I was trying to figure out who I was gonna get to sing the female part and I called a songwriter friend of mine, Jessi Alexander, to come to the studio so I could get a female vocal on it, just 'cause I need to hear it.

"She was busy, and I texted Ella and she showed up in her pyjamas and sang it. That's what you hear on the record - she did that good of a job, I knew nobody was gonna do it any better."

'I Can't Love You Anymore' - with Morgan Wallen (2026)

Ella released 'I Can't Love You Anymore', a collaboration with Morgan Wallen, in April 2026. It appeared on the reissue of Ella's second album, 'Dandelion', and hit the top spot in the country charts in both Canada and US, reaching Number 3 in the UK country charts.

Although this marked their first official collaboration, Ella and Morgan had previously performed together a number of times - including on Morgan's April 2026 tour, where the pair sang 'I Can't Love You Anymore' for the first time at his Tuscaloosa gig.

There are similarities between the story of 'I Can't Love You Anymore' and 'Don't Mind If I Do', as both tracks deal with the aftermath of a break-up. However, where her song with Riley Green leaves the door open for a potential reunion, this song deals with the finality of a relationship ending, with the main character deciding not to go back there again.

The song opens with Ella's character coming across a memento of the relationship: 'I found your lighter in my nightstand / That's why I'm thinking of you, I guess / What part of "Over" don't I understand?' with the pre-chorus lyrics stating how hard it is to resist: 'Your memory pulls me right back in.'

The chorus lyrics take this even further, listing off various scenarios that a person might encounter upon the end of a relationship that can break the heart all over again: 'I can't love you anymore / Can't keep chasing you 'round, 'round the back of my mind / I can't need you anymore / Can't keep sharing this bed with your ghost every night / I hate that your kiss left a burn on my lips / Oh baby, how do I tell my heart it ain't yours / When I've said it before? / I can't love you anymore.'

Morgan said in a press release about the collaboration: "Ella and I have been talking about doing a song for a little while now. We have been on tour together and I’m a huge fan of what she does. I’m honored she wanted me to be the one to do it with her."

'Be Her' (2026)

Another huge hit from 'Dandelion', Ella released 'Be Her' as the second single from the record. Also co-written with Miranda Lambert, it was again a global hit - appearing in both the country and mainstream charts for the UK, US and Canada. It's even been certified Silver by the BPI with over 200,000 UK sales!

Ella spoke out about the meaning of the lyrics in an interview with Katie & Company, revealing that although the lyrics of the chorus are: 'I just wanna be her so bad, it's hurts so bad, it's hurts so', she's not actually talking about another person.

"That song, what it’s about, truly, is it’s not about being someone else, it’s about being the 'her' you want to be. I think there’s things that every single person on this planet would like to see themselves do better as a human being, you know what I mean?

"If you don’t, I do not want to be around you. I do not want to be around you at all. I was just honest, those are all things that I’m looking forward to, in my life, changing about myself a little bit."

This extra context will surely make the lyrics completely slot into place for everyone who listens to the catchy country-pop song. In the first verse alone, we can hear Ella setting out her intentions for the future through the lens of viewing another person - but really, it's her future self she's talking about.

'She drinks wine by the glass, not by the bottle / She ain't stuck on the past, ain't worried about tomorrow / She's a lover, a mother, a sister, and wife / She rolls over in the morning to the love of her life / Only smokes one on vacation, says just what she thinks / She don't need validation or much of anything.'

We can also hear Ella lamenting in the bridge that she'd give everything she has just to experience the life that she wants: 'Don't want all this drama, give me something real / Trade a mile high to walk one in her heels / Take all my money, everything I have / I just wanna be her.' It's truly catchy.

'Jaded' - Koe Wetzel with Ella Langley (2026)

Another 2026 collaboration for Ella was alongside Koe Wetzel for 'Jaded' which was released in August 2026. Being the pair's second song together after 2022's 'That's Why We Fight', it hit Number 15 on the US country chart.

The song is from the perspective of a couple discussing their "emotional baggage" from previous relationships. The very first line hints that, although they're together, things aren't smooth sailing.

Koe's character sings about wanting to be all in with the other person, but that hope is being dashed by the other party's self-destructive behaviour ('But you got some reservations 'bout you, don't ya?'). He then sings that he's got his own problems, too: 'And I kinda like it / How you're damaged just like me / You don't try to hide it, why you tryna hide it?'

The pair then sing together in the pre-chorus, asking each other who'd hurt them so badly, before continuing this train of thought in the chorus: 'How'd you get so jaded? / Who made you like this? / Who gave you these problems? / Even I can't seem to fix / How'd you get so lonely? / How'd you get so cold? / I don't wanna hurt you, baby I just wanna know / How'd you get so jaded?', acknowledging that it's a hard conversation to have, but an important one.

The song carries on in this manner, and the official visualiser sees Koe in a room by himself, drinking and generally seeming unhappy. There's a disco ball in every scene that's backlit by a green light - further adding to the "jade" theme.

Koe told Rolling Stone about working with Ella: "Ella’s an incredible artist and writer. When she delivers a line, you believe it. In ‘Jaded,’ as she’s asking the questions in the chorus, she delivers it with so much care in her voice it draws you in right before it stabs you in the gut. I love it.'

'Paint The Town Blue' (2023)

Ella's song 'Paint The Town Blue' was released as another track from her debut album, 'Hungover'. Co-written by Ella with Will Bundy, Rhett Akins and Travis Wood, it's become one of the defining songs of Ella's career - being hugely popular with her fanbase and appearing fairly frequently on Ella's setlists.

Of course, the title is a play on the well-known phrase "to paint the town red", meaning to go out with your friends, most likely drink alcohol and totally let loose, with mostly positive connotations. In this instance, though, Ella is coining this phrase to put a sad tinge on the situation.

In the first verse, Ella sings about how she's tried the usual routes of dealing with heartbreak: 'I've tried the going out, running 'round with the party crowd / Yeah, I was acting like that heartbreak didn't mean anything / I've tried the burning it up and the shutting it down / Look how that turned out / I've done everything / But giving in to the pain.'

She even references the original phrase in the chorus: 'I ain't gonna smile like it ain't hurting / I'm not drinking nothing but some straight-up bourbon / I ain't gonna lie, I'm so lonesome I could cry / I'm gonna pour it out to the dive bartender / Ain't going to the house 'til I forget to remember / Ever since you left, I've been trying to paint it red / But tonight, I'm doing something new / I'm gonna paint the town blue.'

Ella herself described the song in a press release: "'Paint The Town Blue' is a song about heartbreak and giving yourself that one night to let all the emotions out. Everyone copes with a relationship loss differently and when Will Bundy, Rhett Akins, Travis Wood, and I went into the songwriting room that day we wanted to say it’s okay to let it all out. To quit the fake it till you make it mentality and feel the emotions to move on from that person."
