A three year old girl has died following a crash involving a tram and a van in Manchester city centre.
Emergency services were called to the scene close to Manchester Art Gallery and St Peter's Square earlier today (Saturday 22nd February).
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Emergency services are responding to reports of a collision involving a tram and a van in Manchester city centre.
"A three-year-old girl was taken to hospital and has sadly passed away from her injuries.
"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."
The child was a pedestrian and was not travelling in either the tram or van, Greater Manchester Police also confirmed.
A van which was involved in the collision suffered significant damage.
At the moment the advice for passengers looking to travel by tram is to expect disruption.
Officials say several changes are being put in place - and trams can't currently run between St Peter's Square and Piccadilly Gardens.
A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said:
“At 09:56 this morning, (Saturday 22nd February) there was a collision involving a van and a tram in Manchester City Centre on Mosley Street. Greater Manchester Police have confirmed a three-year-old girl has sadly passed away.
"All of our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. We are supporting police with their investigation."
"There continues to be disruption across Metrolink following the incident so please check the Bee Network website and app for the latest travel information."
A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson said:
"Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the little girl who sadly passed away following an incident in Manchester City centre today.
"We attended the scene at Mosley Street this morning at 9.58am, responding with two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, two air ambulance crews and several senior clinicians."
