A Monifieth mum is highlighting the dangers of e-scooters after her teenage son, who is a wheelchair user, was hit by one in Dundee.

On Saturday night at around 10.15pm, Jack McNaughton was crossing the road at Strathmore Avenue, opposite the Travelodge.

The 17-year-old, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a baby, was struck by an e-scooter, throwing him out of his chair in the process.

The male rider did not stop and made off in the direction of Lawton Road, the suspect is described as wearing dark clothing and a dark knitted hat.

Jack suffered serious injuries including a fractured hip, dislocated wrists along with a broken nose and was taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment.

He has also been left with scars he'll never heal from and head to toe in bruises.

Jack's mum Stacy is now urging people to exercise caution when around the vehicles.

Police Scotland are asking the male suspect to come forward.

One wheel from the wheelchair

Jack has just completed his first year at Dundee & Angus college, with plans to return after the summer break.

However, this will now come after a long recovery period.

Stacy explained how he's feeling right now.

She said: "Traumatised, exhausted and in a lot of pain.

"I think he's emotionally and physically overwhelmed."

Stacy is keen to warn others about the harm e-scooters can do if used inappropriately.

Jack has been able to live independently with the wheelchair and participate in a range of activities

She added: "These have been life changing, possibly life limiting experiences for Jack that could have been much worse.

"I want to spread awareness of the dangers of these e-scooters.

"I hadn't really appreciated the dangers until now. I know locally, kids are really good at slowing down and being courteous when we're out with the dogs.

The chair following the crash

"Having that understanding of how dangerous these things actually are, these have been life changing, possibly life limiting experiences for Jack which could have been much worse.

"I just urge people to proceed with absolute caution if they're on them or around them.

"His chair is mangled, so without that chair, things would've been much worse because I actually think that's saved his life."

A fundraiser has been set up to raise the necessary cash to buy a replacement Batec chair, which has been described as Jack's 'legs and lifelines.'

Inspector Jamie Allen said: “Our enquiries are ongoing to trace this male, and we would ask him to come forward.

“I am also urging anyone who was in the area at the time to please get in touch or has any knowledge as to the identity of the e-scooter rider. If you have private CCTV or dash-cam footage that would also assist our enquiries, please contact us.”

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 4202 of 10 May.
