700 grams of tobacco recovered in crackdown on sale of illegal tobacco in Montrose
Almost 5000 thousand cigarettes were sized during the operation
Police have carried out a joint operation with Trading Standards Officers to tackle the retail sale of illegal tobacco products in Montrose.
Officers from the Montrose, Brechin and Inveresk Community Policing Team were part of the operation which sized 4860 cigarettes and 700 grams of tobacco.
Activity 'will not be tolerated'
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: " Counterfeit cigarettes can pose a greater risk than normal cigarettes because they can contain higher levels of harmful and unknown chemicals and the illegal sale also undermines legitimate retailers."
Police Sergeant Patullo added: “By working with Trading standards this seizure of illegal tobacco products sends a clear message that this type of activity will not be tolerated within the Montrose community”.
