Two dead after light aircraft crash in Rochdale

Two people have died after a light aircraft crashed into farmland in Littleborough, Rochdale,.

Emergency services were called to the area shortly after 11am on 3rd February following reports that a small plane had come down.

The aircraft, believed to be a Cirrus light plane, had taken off from Birmingham earlier in the morning.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the two people on board were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation underway

Police say there is no indication that anyone else was on board and no reported injuries on the ground.

A cordon remains in place and the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) arrived on site in the evening to begin their enquiries.

National Grid also attended to support the emergency response, confirming there should be no disruption to electricity supply.

While some minor disruption is possible in the area, residents have been thanked for their patience.

Officers remain at the scene

Chief Superintendent Danny Inglis, from GMP’s Rochdale district, said: “This is a devastating incident where two people have lost their lives and our thoughts are with their families and friends.

“We have been working closely with emergency service colleagues and partner agencies throughout the day to establish the full circumstances and we will be on scene overnight and into tomorrow.

“There will be an enhanced presence as officers and investigators comprehensively survey the area and ensure all available evidence is recovered.
