Former News Editor with over 40 years service collects MBE
John Pickford, former Editor in Chief at Bauer Media received his MBE today at Windsor Castle
A journalist and news editor, who's spent decades serving his local community and covering some of the biggest stories across the UK, today picked up an MBE at Windsor Castle.
John Pickford spent 46 years working in the news department at Bauer Media and was awarded an MBE for services to broadcasting and local news.
Today the former Editor was given the honour by Princess Anne at Windsor Castle after he was named in the King’s New Year Honours List.
Pickford, from Denton in Greater Manchester, began his career at the Stockport Express in 1976 before moving into Broadcasting at Piccadilly Radio in 1979, recently retiring as Editor-in Chief
A 'recognition of the continued importance of local news'
Speaking after receiving his MBE, John told us it was also a recognition of local news on commercial radio:
“I have said before that I’ve accepted the MBE as recognition of the continued importance of local news which is impartial and accurate on commercial radio and also recognition of the campaigns the news team at Bauer have spearheaded over the years including Clare’s Law."
He also told us that while talking to Princess Anne she "agreed that local radio and local news is more vital than ever in highlighting local issues."
When the honours were announced in January Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "This year's Honours list celebrates the very best of Britain - people who put the common good ahead of themselves to strengthen communities and change lives.
"Their quiet dedication speaks to the decent, compassionate country we are proud to be. On behalf of the whole nation, thank you - and congratulations to everyone recognised today."
