A cordon is in place at a building site in Plymouth after a suspected unexploded ordnance was discovered.
Police were called to the scene on Flamborough Road in Southway at around 2:30pm this afternoon (29th April).
Bomb disposals experts from The Royal Navy are at the site to assesing the device.
Safety cordon extended
Following advice from military bomb disposal experts, the safety cordon around the incident in the Flamborough Road, Southway area is to be extended from 200 metres to 400 metres to allow specialist teams to continue their work safely.
The council tells us that, at this stage, it is not known how long the cordon will need to remain in place, as this will depend on the outcome of the specialist assessment.
Residents within the expanded cordon are now being asked to temporarily leave their homes, with Police in the area to speak with affected residents and ensure they have the support they need.
Those who have been displaced as result of the cordon can go to the Southway Youth and Community Centre, where Plymouth City council and Plymouth Community Homes staff are available to offer support, and information.
The council has issued this advice for anyone asked to evacuate:
- Where possible leave your windows open
- Turn off the stop tap to isolate water to your property. This may be out in the footpath or an internal stop tap within the property itself.
- Take enough clothes and essential items for the next two days. Remember to bring any medications or medical equipment you may need, including walking sticks, frames or mobility aids.
- Take any hygiene items you require, along with essentials for babies and children, such as nappies, formula, bottles, food and comfort items.
- If possible, bring a power pack or charger for mobile phones, hearing aids or other essential devices.
- Take important household documents.
- Remember any supplies for pets, if needed.
The incident is ongoing and people are being asked by police to avoid the area.
